Skincare Scholar, Session 4 - ingredient names We know how hard it can be to read labels and know what you and your family are using and feel confident using! Even natural ingredients can have some pretty intimidating names, adding to the uncertainty.

So why does it have to be SO confusing?!?

bottles of skincare products

Every ingredient in a product will usually have at least two names; a common name and INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) and sometimes more names. Yikes!

Example:

  • Coconut Oil (common name)
  • Cocos Nucifera (INCI name)

So many skincare products are manufactured, sold and used internationally. INCI labeling allows for a standard method of listing ingredients in a formula that can be recognized worldwide.
